Internship Description
My internship is at Bregante + Company LLP and it provides Tax services, accounting, and auditing services. I am part time employee and I am there to help them use the DMS system. I use the copier and scan the files, which are peoples tax planning and work papers, using the copy machine, instead of copying the papers I send them to myself using the program touch-screen. This information is very important and I must name them properly and make sure I seperate them correctly. Accountants must read this information later figure out what to do with it. If there are stickies on it, which there shouldn't be but there are plenty of, I have to take them off and make sure I put it back. Sending what I copied can come in chunks if it is big enough, and I must reattach it all together again. If the copier makes an error or corrupts the file, such as making black lines on the paper, I must open it up and clean up the spot and test it until it works. If staples are in the papers I must take them out also, and if it is place in a certain way, I have to put them back. If I miss one, the copier usually jams, and I have to clear it and pull it all out and start over again.
Organization Overview
There are 3 partners at the top, Jeff, Ken and Paul. Jeff Belingheri is the managing partner and works at the Novato office most of the time. Ken works at the San Francisco office mostly, and Paul mostly works at the Pleasanton office. Often though they switch to different offices depending on their clients and their needs. Frankie Britt is the Tax manager and is below them. Tonia and Ted are supervisors and oversee Mimi Pak and Sung Hee. They don't order them around or anything but they check over their clients and look over reports. Gina is the administrative secretary and works at a different chain of jobs, but is around Frankie's level.
Organization Structure and Culture
The culture there is the same as the attire, buisiness casual. Work is being done, but it is usaully laidback and people there are nice. They talk if they see each other, and you can go to the lunch room whenever you want and take a drink or some food. Jeff, is nice but a straightfoward boss and wants to see the work done right, but is not too hard on his people. He doesn't take much time to chat, unless it's on the phone with a client. It is generally quiet there, and people are seperated by their indivdual offices. I work in the cubicle by the lunch room, because the copier is right there as well as the file room. The administrative secretary, Gina, sits next to the main door, and takes most of the calls. Most of the people working there are in their open offices near a window. It is not crowded there, and only about 8 people work there, though a couple people like Ken and Brian are rarely there.
Career Path to Top
Partner is the highest part of the job and they do much work but are rewarded handsomely for it. They have to get clients and bring them into the company and talk to them, and help them with their finances. Mathematics, organization, managing and speaking skills are necessary for this field. To get to this position you have to start as an accountant, then a supervisor and then a tax manager or higher echelon job, and after a good amount of experience, and some retirements you might just get the job. Math classes, like calculus and algebra will help for this job. Having a 4.0 in high school, joining some clubs or doing an internship, 4 years of college, a masters degree in the science of taxation, a bachelor degree of business administration will help attain this high level field. 200$ an hour is what the managing partner at my office makes, and the other partners probably aren't too far away. Attending Cal Poly could cost around $18,000 to attend, but is useful for this field. Attending Golden Gate University for the graduate programs can be about $8,000 over 4 years to achieve the bachelor degree of business administration.
How my Internship Fits/Does Not My Future
My internship fits my future because it introduces me to a working environment. I don't necessarily want to work in an office, or work an accounting job, but I may work in an office type environment in the future. My internship also fits because I plan on working at a job with not many employees, and my office only has 7 or so, depending who is there. It is a casual environment, and I'd like to work in a place that is like that.
Advice to New Interns
Ask questions if you ever need anything answered, or need help.
If something breaks don't stress out and ask for help, whenever the scanner broke or made an error and if I couldn't handle it I just called the IT guy, who is always ready and willing to help.
Do your best to help the company and don't complain.
Be nice to your coworkers and talk to them at least once in a while.
Try to keep busy [or at least look busy]
